Morning Writing
Note: I intend to publish a short piece every week. I missed last week, but am back at it this week and intend to be consistent going forward. Thanks for reading.
A commonly recommended habit is to write in the morning, especially to write about something positive. One popular idea is Morning Pages: sitting down and hand writing three pages as soon as you wake up, about whatever you think of.
That seems like a bit too much to me. But I have been experimenting with writing about my biggest goals every morning. It’s been great. It’s helping me to define my big audacious goals. And it helps me start the day with a positive, purposeful mindset.
I just sit down and think about an area of my life that I can imagine improving. I imagine what that part of my life will be like in five or ten years. Then I write about in as much detail as I can. I try to create a vivid image in my mind. Something that will inspire me to take action.
I recently read a great post on this idea of visualizing goals and working towards them. The post is a bit long-winded, but I found points 1-3 very good:
Define your ideal Future Self in great detail.
Every morning, think and write about your Future Self.
Take decisive action to get closer to your Future Self.
Simply thinking about how we would like our lives to be a few years out can be very helpful in setting a direction and connecting our everyday actions to a bigger purpose. It’s worth a shot. It might even be helpful to do it once, or just occasionally.
